Skylines and Sweet Tea

Where’s Ebony you ask? She’s still here! Trying to spend her Spring Break recovering from midterms and functioning enough to apply for internships, but she’s still alive and so is her love for travel.

A few weeks ago I was blessed with the opportunity to attend a journalism workshop in Atlanta and here are a few things I learned during my stay:

1) Atlanta is HUGE. Like massive. Our hotel boasted being “right in downtown Atlanta.” I was excited to be in walking distance from all the action. WRONG. I was actually a 20 minute drive to the heart of downtown and our hotel was NOT guilty of false-advertising. The entire area accounted for “downtown.”

2) Just because you’re in the South does not mean you’re in podunk nowhere land. Small, southern towns do exist however Atlanta is not one of them. I’ve always known Atlanta was a big city and a huge market for news, but being from South Florida I always thought “How nice could it be?” Well, I stand corrected. It’s beautiful. You can rub elbows with the wealthy in Buckhead or go tubing down snowy hills at Stone Mountain. Atlanta is a modern city but there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature.

3) Don’t be disappointed, southern hospitality is still a thing! And so is sweet tea. Thank God!

*My phone died during my exploration of downtown ATL and a complete stranger let me use their car charger AND called me a cab. Four for you Atlanta, four for you.

At the famous Mary Mac’s tea room you can get a taste of old southern favorites such as sweet tea, fried chicken, grits and peach cobbler with homemade ice-cream! The lines were long but it was totally worth the wait. You write down your order to customize it any way you’d like without making ordering a hassle. They also have vegetarian friendly options! If you have time, visiting Mary Mac’s is a must.

4) Fun Fact: After the 1996 Olympics, Georgia Tech bought Olympic Village and use the facilities as dorms. Students at Georgia Tech can work out in a gym fit for the world’s greatest athletes!

5) Thanks to the Georgia Aquarium I’ve discovered a deep inner desire to be a dolphin trainer. The aquarium does a wonderful job of promoting marine conservation while still being entertaining. The dolphin show I saw was a musical featuring singing trainers and dolphins that squeak on cue to the song lyrics. Bonus: There are whale sharks. WHALE SHARKS!  Seriously, how do I sign up to work here?

Atlanta taught me that you can’t judge a book (or a complete region of the U.S. aka ‘the South’) by its cover. While there are negative connotations attached to the South, you can’t assume every place will live up to those stereotypes and misconceptions. You have to go in with an open mind and to be honest I LOVED Atlanta. I’d be honored to live and work there someday. We’ll see each other soon, ATL!
